IPO GMP, Live GMP and GMP Status Explained

Everything you need to know about IPO GMP for mainboard IPO and SME IPO issues in India.

What is IPO GMP?

IPO GMP stands for grey market premium. It is the unofficial extra amount that buyers pay over the issue price for an IPO share before listing. If the IPO GMP is ₹40 on an issue price of ₹160, the grey market expects a listing near ₹200. IPOView collects the IPO GMP for every mainboard IPO and SME IPO in one table so you can compare issues quickly. Always remember that GMP is unofficial and can change every day.

Live GMP on IPOView

Live GMP is the heart of IPOView. The scrolling bar at the top shows the live GMP of open and upcoming IPOs, and the table below lists the issue price, lot size, dates and estimated listing price. Right now there are 5 open and 0 upcoming IPOs on the tracker. Open the Live GMP list before every application and check how the premium has moved over the last few days.

Mainboard IPO GMP

A mainboard IPO is listed on the main platform of NSE and BSE and usually comes from larger, better known companies. The GMP of a mainboard IPO is followed by many more investors, so it is worth watching closely. On IPOView you can filter the list to see only the mainboard IPO issues, compare each mainboard IPO GMP with its subscription numbers and decide which issue deserves your time.

SME IPO GMP

An SME IPO lists on NSE SME or BSE SME and is meant for smaller, growing companies. The SME IPO GMP can swing sharply, because the issue is small and the minimum lot is large. IPOView tracks the SME IPO GMP separately so you can read each SME IPO with extra care, check the live GMP often and avoid chasing a sudden jump in the premium.

How to read GMP status

GMP status shows the mood of the grey market at a glance. A positive GMP status means the premium is above zero and demand looks healthy. A zero GMP status means the market is neutral, and a negative GMP status means the grey market expects a listing below the issue price. Combine the GMP status with subscription data to judge an IPO, whether it is a mainboard IPO or an SME IPO.

Use IPO GMP wisely

The IPO GMP is a useful clue, but it should never be your only reason to apply. Read the company details, check the financials, look at the live GMP trend and the subscription status, and only then decide. A mainboard IPO and an SME IPO carry different risks, so size your investment accordingly. IPOView gives you the data; the final decision on every IPO is yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers on IPO, IPO GMP, live GMP and GMP status.

What is IPO GMP?

IPO GMP is the grey market premium, the unofficial price at which an IPO share trades before it lists on NSE or BSE. If the issue price is ₹100 and the IPO GMP is ₹20, the grey market expects a listing near ₹120. It is an unofficial indicator and not a guarantee.

What is live GMP on IPOView?

Live GMP is the latest grey market premium we have for each open and upcoming IPO. IPOView shows live GMP in the scrolling bar at the top and in the main table, together with the issue price, lot size and estimated listing price.

What does GMP status mean?

GMP status tells you whether the grey market premium of an IPO is positive, negative or flat. A positive GMP status means the grey market is quoting above the issue price, a negative GMP status means below it, and a zero GMP status means no premium is being quoted yet.

How is the estimated listing price calculated?

Estimated listing price is the issue price plus the IPO GMP. For example, an issue price of ₹150 with a live GMP of ₹30 gives an estimated listing price of ₹180, or a 20% premium. Actual listing can differ because the GMP keeps changing.

What is the difference between a mainboard IPO and an SME IPO?

A mainboard IPO lists on the main platform of NSE and BSE and usually has a bigger issue size and a smaller minimum application amount. An SME IPO lists on NSE SME or BSE SME, has a smaller issue size and a larger minimum lot, and is generally more volatile.

Is SME IPO GMP reliable?

SME IPO GMP can move quickly because the issue size is small and fewer shares are traded in the grey market. Treat the SME IPO GMP as one signal along with subscription numbers, financials and the company background, never as the only reason to apply.

Can the GMP of a mainboard IPO be negative?

Yes. The GMP of a mainboard IPO can turn negative when the grey market expects a listing below the issue price. A negative GMP status is a warning sign about demand, so check the subscription status and the company fundamentals before you decide.

Where can I see live GMP for open and upcoming IPOs?

Open the IPOView home page. The live GMP bar at the top and the filters for Open and Upcoming list every current IPO GMP, and you can switch between mainboard IPO and SME IPO to narrow the list.

Does a high IPO GMP guarantee listing gains?

No. A high IPO GMP only shows what the grey market expects at that moment. It can fall before listing, and the market on listing day decides the actual price. Never invest only because of a high IPO GMP.

How do I check IPO allotment after applying?

After the basis of allotment is finalised, use the Allotment Check option on IPOView or the registrar website with your PAN or application number. Allotment is usually finalised a day or two after the IPO closes.
